Install W.Me on a Newly Formatted Drive

To install Windows Me on the new drive

  • Insert the Windows Startup disk in drive A, and then start the computer.
  • At the Microsoft Windows Startup menu, you can choose to start the computer with or without CD?ROM support. Press the number on your keyboard that corresponds to the choice you want.
Note: You have 30 seconds to choose an option. If you don't, the Windows Startup disk starts the computer with CD-ROM support, and might display a Help file. You can exit the Help file by pressing ALT+F on your keyboard to open the File menu, and then pressing X.

  • When the command prompt appears, place the Windows Me product CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  • Change to the CD-ROM drive. To do so, at the command prompt, type D: (or the appropriate drive letter, followed by a colon), and then press ENTER.
Note: The CD-ROM drive is automatically assigned the next letter after the last hard disk. If you have just a C drive, the CD-ROM drive will be D.

  • Type setup and then press ENTER.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen. If you have the Windows Me Upgrade product, you must insert a product CD or floppy disk from a previous full version of Windows. The instructions will tell you when to put the Windows Me product CD back into the drive.

  • After Windows Me finishes installing, the Enter Windows Password dialog box appears. Type your user name and password, and then click OK.
The user name can be anything you want. Your password appears as asterisks (*) on the screen. If you don't want to use a password, you can leave the box blank, and then click OK.
  • In the Set Windows Password dialog box, type your password again, and then click OK.

After Windows Me is installed, you may want to spend a few minutes taking the Windows Millennium Edition Tour. The Tour gives beginners some basics of using Windows Me, and highlights some features that are new in Windows Me. You can find it by clicking the Start button, clicking Help, and then clicking Tour and tutorials on the Help and Support toolbar.

If you want to set up an Internet account, e?mail account, or instant messaging, see Chapter 2, "Getting the Internet, E?mail, and Messaging."
