Create a Windows Startup Disk

Time to complete: about 5-15 minutes. You can create a Startup disk either from Windows Me or Windows 98.

To create a Windows Startup disk

  • Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.

  • When the Windows Startup disk is created, test to ensure that your computer starts from the disk. To do so, insert the disk in drive A of the computer you want to install Windows Me on, shut down the computer, and then after a few seconds, restart it. A menu screen offers two startup options: with or without CD?ROM support. Select With CD-ROM Support.

    The Windows Startup disk you created can find and allow access to most, but not all, CD drives. If it can't find or gain access to your drive, follow the instructions that came with your hardware to create a Windows Startup disk that will allow access to the CD?ROM drive.

    If an error is displayed, your computer might be set to start only from the hard disk and not the floppy disk. To change this option in the computer's CMOS setup, see your computer documentation.
