Important considerations

By heeding these considerations, you help ensure that Windows Me installs and operates correctly.

  • Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for Windows Me.
    a) Pentium or equivalent, 150 MHz (megahertz) or higher processor.
    b) 32 MB (megabytes) of RAM (random access memory). More memory improves performance.
    c) Adequate free hard-disk space. An adequate amount depends on the installation scenario you choose. A compact installation with minimal features requires approximately 455 MB. A typical installation requires between 480 and 545 MB. A custom installation where all options are selected requires up to 635 MB.
    d) VGA or higher resolution monitor.
    e) CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
    f) Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.

  • Locate the documentation for your computer hardware. You need this in case you need to change CMOS settings or check other information.

  • Determine whether your computer requires "drive overlay software" to allow it to see large hard disks. If so, you might need to use that software to prepare the disk drive. However, even though this software comes with most hard disks, you should not install it unless it's required to properly access the disk. Most recently manufactured computers do not require this software.

  • Check for late-breaking information about setting up Windows Me. You do so by reading the Setup.txt file on the Windows Me product CD, and performing any additional preinstall steps as suggested.

  • Back up all critical data on your hard disk. While it is unlikely you will encounter a serious problem installing Windows Me, it is always a good idea to perform a complete system backup before installing a new operating system. When you upgrade your computer's operating system, it is possible that an error could occur (such as a problem due to incompatible hardware or a power failure) that could temporarily or permanently prevent access to the data on your hard disk.

  • If you are planning a dual-boot scenario with Microsoft Windows NT®, install Windows Me first.
