Before You Begin
Time to complete: about 10-30 minutes Microsoft Windows Me prompts
you for information so that it can be set up properly. This section
helps you prepare for any information Windows Me may require. Materials
Gather the items noted below before you begin:
The Windows Me product CD. You may need this CD if you plan on
connecting other equipment to your computer that Windows Me doesn't
automatically recognize.
A 3.5-inch floppy disk. You need this to create a Windows Startup
disk. This disk is also called the emergency boot disk (EBD).
The product key. The 25 letters and numbers of the product key
uniquely distinguish your genuine Microsoft product from a pirated
copy. Windows Me will not work without your product key. It
accompanies the software package you purchased and can be found on
the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label. The COA label is located
either on the back of this guide, or on the shrink wrap.
Driver disks from equipment manufacturers. If you have a hardware
device (such as a printer) that requires software drivers that are
not part of Windows Me, you need the disk or CD that the manufacturer
provided with these drivers.
Important considerations
There are some important steps you should take before upgrading to
Windows Me: Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for
Windows Me. Your computer needs to meet the following requirements:
Pentium or equivalent, 150 MHz (megahertz) or higher processor.
32 MB (megabytes) of RAM (random access memory). More memory
improves performance.
Adequate free hard-disk space. An adequate amount depends on the
installation scenario you choose. A compact installation with minimum
features requires approximately 455 MB. A typical installation requires
between 480 and 545 MB. A custom installation where all options are
selected requires up to 635 MB. For each of these three scenarios,
choosing to back up your prior version of Windows can require up to an
additional 150 MB. Backing up your prior version allows you to uninstall
Windows Me if you want and return your computer to its prior condition.
VGA or higher resolution monitor.
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.
