Nicaragua: (En Espaņol) This country has a population of some 6, 000, 000 comprised of the following ethnic groups: Mestizos 69%, White Descent 17%, African Descent 9% and Amerindians 5%, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America having a land mass of 130, 668 km 2, a little less than England. Our lowest point is sea level, Nicaragua's water bodies, made up of fresh-water lakes and lagoons, cover 9,240 km2, the lake of Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America and the eighth largest in the world cover 8,264 km 2, and the lake of Managua covers some 1.064 km 2, and the remaining bodies of water are dozens of crater lakes located in volcanoes which have been extinct for thousands of years.
Nicaragua's official language is Spanish. However, due to the influence of the British during their periods of occupation, English is widely used languages are used in most of the indigenous communities throughout the Atlantic region. Nicaragua's national flower is the Sacuanjoche, our national bird is the Guardabarranco and our national tree is the Madroņo. The Convent and Church of Saint Francis, founded in 1529, is the oldest church in Central America as well as being one of the area'smost important colonial buildings. It houses a Museum which contains much of the priceless pre Columbian Nicaraguan Statuary
